WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS & FACULTIES OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AT LUNGLEI

 

 

Background: As a part of the project objectives and mandate of the State Climate Change Cell under National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE) and the Strategic Knowledge Mission (SKM) of the Mizoram State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) to carry out capacity building programme at institutional and stakeholder level, it is felt necessary to build the capacity of teachers and faculties of elementary, middle schools, high schools, higher secondary schools and colleges by sensitizing them on the knowledge of Climate Change, its issues and challenges in Mizoram. This initiative aims to equip teachers with knowledge which they will be able to impart to their current students and the coming generation to build well informed system for resilience against long term climate change.

            The capacity building programme on climate change issues, organized specifically for teachers and faculties of educational institutions, is planned to be carried out at each of the district headquarters of Mizoram. With this background, a one-day programme was carried on 8th October 2024 at Lunglei by collaborating with the Office of the Education Officer, Govt. of Mizoram. (Programme leaflet enclosed at annexure).

Report:

  • The programme started at 10:30 am and was chaired by Dr. Davy Lalruatliana, Senior Scientific Officer, Mizoram Science, Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC). He gave a welcome speech, addressing the participants on the objectives and purpose of the workshop.
  • Keynote address was given by Pu Lalthanpuia, Project Scientist-II, SCCC, wherein he highlighted the importance of conducting the capacity building workshop for science teachers in different districts of Mizoram.
  • Chief Guest Pi K.Lalrintluangi, District Education Officer, Lunglei District, Govt. of Mizoram also gave a speech on the on-going climate change crisis worldwide. She stresses the importance and duties of teachers on helping students do their bit towards saving our environment.
  • A short message was also given by Pu Er. H. Lalsawmliana, Chief Scientific Officer & Member Secretary, MISTIC. He too stresses on the importance of the workshop in building knowledge of the Science teachers within the districts.
  • The technical session was presented by two resource people. The first was given by Dr. Seikuti Nohro, Project Associate, State Climate Change Cell, Mizoram Science, Technology and Innovation Council (MISTIC) on the topic: Summary for Policymaker by IPCC. The topic is on the following points:
  • Introduction of IPCC (Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change)
  • Working body of the IPCC and their assessment reports
  • Brief explanation on the differences between Weather, Climate, Global Warming and Climate Change.
  • IPCC’s sixth assessment report on the Current status of Climate Change and Future projections, risk and long-term responses
  • The second presentation was given by Dr. PC Vanlalnunpuia, Project Associate, State Climate Change Cell, Mizoram Science, Technology and Innovation Council (MISTIC) on the topic: Climate Change and Its Issues: Mizoram Context. The topic stressed the following points:
  • Explanation of the term climate, weather, and climate change.
  • Working of the global climate.
  • Causes of climate change.
  • Historical trends of recorded global climate change and challenges.
  • Projected climate change scenarios and their probable impacts.
  • Historical trend of recorded climate change and challenges in Mizoram
  • Steps to address climate change issues and challenges.
  • Results and findings of Vulnerability Assessment conducted for different sectors.
  • Results and findings of Climate Risk Assessment conducted for Flood and drought.
  • A fruitful Q & A session followed.
  • Vote of thanks was given by Pu John Lalchhuanawma Sailo, Scientific Officer, MISTIC.
  • Teachers of Science, Environmental Studies and Social Studies were invited to attend the workshop. A total of 80 teachers from different schools within Lunglei District participated in the programme.
