About National Science Day
Background
National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28 February each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928. For his discovery, Sir C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) asked the Government of India to designate February 28 as National Science Day. The event is now celebrated all over India in schools, colleges, universities and other academic, scientific, technical, medical and research institutions. On the occasion of the first NSD (National Science Day)(28 February 1987) NCSTC announced the institution of the National Science Popularization awards for recognizing outstanding efforts in the area of science communication and popularization.
National Science Day is celebrated to spread a message about the importance of science used in the daily life of the people. To display all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare. It is celebrated to discuss all the issues and implement new technologies for the development in the field of science. To give an opportunity to the scientific minded citizens in India. To encourage the people as well as popularize science and technology.

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY 2021
Celebration
National Science Day was observed in Mizoram on the 1st March 2021. Home Minister Pu Lalchamliana graced the occasion as chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, the minister highlighted the importance of scientific awareness and research in science and technology. He emphasized the need to concentrate on science laboratories especially in academic institutes. He congratulated all the winners of State Level Science Quiz Award, 2021 which was organized by Mizoram Science, Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC). He appealed to all the students of Mizoram to strive hard in the area of science and technology and inculcate scientific temper amongst them. Er. H.Lalsawmliana, Chief Scientific Officer & Member Secretary, MISTIC chaired the occasion. Mr. Samuel Lalmalsawma, Senior Scientific Officer delivered a brief report on NSD and Mr. P.C. Lalngilneia presented paper based on this year’s National Science Day theme and CV Raman’s work. The theme of National Science Day for this year is ‘Future of Science and Technology and Innovation (STI): Impact on Education Skills and Work’. This year’s theme tries to enhance the appreciation of the impact of science and technology on education and skill. As a part of the observation of the National Science Day, an online webinar was also conducted in collaboration with 36 scientific institutions/departments in Mizoram.
