East Lungdar town is in the eastern Part of Mizoram at a coordinate of latitude 23.2022° N and 93.0886° E longitude. The town has a population of 3815 belonging to 750 household. The town covers an area of about 5.48 sq. km.
Status and management of natural resources
The town has safety reserve under the administration of village council. They also have one park maintained by the Young Mizo Association. These conservation sites house the village water sources such as Kar zau stream accessed by diesel powered water pump, and Sih lui which is not perennial anymore during the recent years. The water harvested from these sources are stored in a community water tank which are distributed about two times a week through around 20 numbers of water points scattered within the village. The other water source is rainwater harvesting. The village also have one hand pumped borewell, 8 perennial springwater. Even then, there is acute shortage of water during dry season.
Climate change perception
Rainfall becomes significantly erratic during the recent years. Temperature is gradually increasing as precepted by the common people. Impacts on health are not clearly perceived.
Agriculture and horticulture issues
The occupation of majority of the population is agriculture. In 2021, 100 families engaged in shifting cultivation. Around 250 household have orange plantation. Other major crops are ginger, paddy and maize. WRC practised by around 100 household, Irrigation and Water resource department intervention covers about 50% of the land water requirement while the rest 50% manage by their own. MGNREGS were utilised to till the WRC lands. Majority of fertilizers used are organic while there is still usage of chemicals as well.
Orange orchards are started from the 1980s, they start to fail in the northern side while the rest are still doing well. But the size of the fruit harvested during 2020 are smaller than the previous years. Rabi crops are still doing well.
