Serchhip town is in the central part of Mizoram at a coordinate of latitude 23.3417° N, 92.8502° E longitude. It is a district headquarter with a population of around 65000 individuals.

Status and management of natural resources

There are two reserve forests; Serchhip tlang and Bawng tlang under the protection of district sub-headquarter of the Young Mizo Association. Within the reserve, there is a perennial water source called Sakhi sih at Bawngtlang. At DInthar area within Serchhip town, there are five reservoirs of water collected from perennial water sources called Thumbawk river and Sesah river. Apart from these, five perennial streams are available for the town which they partially accessed. Groundwater resources are not accessed for domestic water needs within the town area. Water sources at the town are mainly from Public Health Engineering Department undertaken water pipeline connection from the above-mentioned water sources.

At Zawlpui Mat phai; the lower reaches below the town at the bank of Mat river where agriculture and horticulture practises are concentrated, water are accessed through water pump from river, gravity based collection from small streams and groundwater accessed through submersible pump and hand pumped borewells.

Climate change perception

It has been notices that rainfall has become very erratic now a days and temperature has been gradually increasing. Its impact on pisciculture becomes significant as water source from small streams are diminishing. One important small stream called Mualvawm lui has already dried up these days. Effect of climate change on health are not much known/perceived.
