About National Mathematics Day
HISTORY
National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22 December every year to mark the birth anniversary of legendary Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan and his contributions in the field of mathematics.
On 22 December 2012, the former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, paid tribute to Srinivasa Ramanujan at a function organised on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan in Chennai. 22 December was declared as National Mathematics Day. Thus, on 22 December 2012, National Mathematics Day was celebrated across the country for the first time.
Contributions of Ramanujan in Mathematics
Ramanujan’s genius has been regarded by mathematicians to be at par with Euler and Jacobi from the 18th and 19th centuries, respectively. His work in the number theory is especially regarded, and he made advances in the partition function. Ramanujan was recognised for his mastery of continued fractions, and had worked out the Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hypergeometric series, and the functional equations of the zeta function. After his death, Ramanujan left behind three notebooks and some pages containing unpublished results, on which mathematicians continued to work on for many years.
The Dev Patel-starrer ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’ (2015) was a biopic on the mathematician.

DAY CELEBRATION 2019
Mizoram Science, Technology & Innovation Council (MISTIC) and Mizoram Mathematics Society (MMS) jointly organized celebration of National Mathematics Day 2019 on the 20 December, 2019 at ATI Auditorium, MINECO, Khatla. Dr. C. Vanlalramsanga, Secretary, Planning & Programme Implementation Department graced the programme as Chief Guest and Dr. R.K. Lallianthanga, Chief Scientific Officer & Member Secretary of MISTIC was the chairman. The programme was attended by students, teachers, parents and distinguished government officials.
In the welcoming speech, Dr. R.K. Lallianthanga, CSO & Member Secretary, MISTIC said the evolution of National Mathematics Day and how it has been celebrated in the state. Besides, he stated the importance and the paramountcy of Science and Mathematics especially for development in the field of technology. Also, he urged the teachers to try to bolster Mathematics and the students to come up with Mathematics as one of their main interests and to inculcate the spirit of learning as well as to study more fervently.
In this occasion, praising the initiative of MISTIC & MMS, the Chief Guest said that the way Mizo people perceived Mathematics as an abstruse and tedious have been gradually changed into an interesting and engrossing subject. He said that students in this generation are very fortunate that they have the privilege of living in the so-called computer age, they have been surrounded by highly sophisticated computer applications and internet. Hundreds of online learning applications and videos could be found in the internet and he instigated the students to try to learn and to utilize to the maximum extent these technological advancement in their studies.
In relation to the celebration of NMD, State Level Mathematics Competition was organized for class – 5, 8, 10 and 12 standards. Mr. H. Vanlalhriata, Exam Co-ordinator gave a brief report on the “State Level Mathematics Competition”. Mr. Lalrinpuia Tlau, Secretary, Mizoram Mathematics Society delivered presentation on the topic of “Contribution of Ramanujan in Mathematics”. It was followed by Prize distribution.
Mr. Samuel Lalmalsawma, Senior Scientific Officer, MISTIC ended the programme with vote of thanks.
