SENSITIZATION WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE CHANGE AT CHAMPHAI

            As per the objectives of National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE), an awareness program on climate change by means of workshop was conducted at Government Champhai College which was titled 'Sensitization Workshop on Climate Change in Mizoram'. The main objectives of the workshop is to sensitized the under-graduate students and the faculties on matters related to Climate Change and its potential impact on the environment and on humans.

            The workshop emphasizes on the following sectors:

  1. Overview on Climate Change with reference to IPCC AR5
  2. Climate Scenario of Mizoram with special emphasis to Champhai district

            The workshop was started with a short welcome remark by Mr. Lalnunmawia, Principal, Government Champhai College. He addressed all the participants including the staffs of Mizoram State Climate Change Cell which enabled the success of the programme.

            Dr. James Lalnunzira Hrahsel, Project Scientist, Mizoram State Climate Change Cell then gave a powerpoint presentation on 'Overview of Climate Change' in which he explains the concept of climate change and highlight briefly the global historical climate changes and the future projections of climate scenario given by IPCC in the AR5. He also talks about the climate model of Mizoram generated by SimClim 2013 AR5.  

            The second powerpoint presentation was given by Pu Lalthanpuia, Project Scientist, Mizoram State Climate Change Cell in which he talked about the climate scenario of Mizoram as a whole with special emphasis on the climate scenario of Aizawl and Champhai town which were analyzed from meteorological data collected from different local sources. He also talked about different probable scenario of the world in a constantly warming earth.

            An interactive discussion followed in which several questions from Students and Faculty of the College were answered. The workshop cum awareness programme ended with a vote of thanks by the co-organizer of the workshop Dr. Zothansangi, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Government Champhai College. A total of 137 participants from Faculty and Students of Government Champhai College, Staff from Mizoram State Climate Change Cell attended the programme.
