BACKGROUND

            As per the objectives of the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE), an awareness program on climate change has been conducted in Government Kolasib College in the form of a ‘Sensitization Workshop on Climate Change in Mizoram’. The main objectives of the workshop is to sensitized the Under-graduate students and the faculties on matters related to Climate Change and its potential impact on the environment and on humans.

            The workshop emphasizes the following sectors:

  1. Overview on Climate Change with reference to Mizoram
  2. Climate Change and Water resources
  3. Climate Change and Human Health

 

INAUGURAL PROGRAMME

The inaugural function was chaired by Pu Zosiamliana Colney, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Zoology, Govt. Kolasib College. He delivered a short welcome address to all the participants and thanks to them for their enthusiasm and participation. A short speech was given by Pu B.S. Thapa, Principal, Govt. Kolasib College highlighting the importance and the negative impacts of climate change in the present world. A brief keynote address was given by Pu Lalthanpuia, Project Scientist, Mizoram State Climate Change Cell. In his address, he highlighted the formulation of the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and the different major mission therein which encourages the subsequent formulation of the State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC). He then briefly highlighted the establishment of the Mizoram State Climate Change Cell and its objectives. He then concluded his address with the reason for organizing a one-day Sensitization Workshop on Climate Change in Mizoram which is one of the objectives of the State Climate Change Cell as a part of its awareness programs.

TECHNICAL SESSION

The technical session was chaired by Pi Romuanpuii, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Government Kolasib College. The first oral presentation was given by Pi Janet Laltlansangi, Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Government Kolasib College. His topic was “Introduction to Climate Change”. The second presentation was jointly given by Dr. James Lalnunzira Hrahsel and Pu Lalthanpuia, Project Scientist, State Climate Change Cell with the topic entitled “An overview on Climate Change with reference to Mizoram”. In this presentation, the causes and effects of climate change were presented. The climatic scenario of Mizoram during the last 30 years was presented. Strategies on adaptation and mitigation were also presented in this topic followed by further discussions. The third presentation was also jointly given by Dr. James Lalnunzira Hrahsel and Pu Lalthanpuia, Project Scientist, State Climate Change Cell with the topic entitled “Vulnerability and risk assessment of climate change – Health and Water resources sectors”.
